Marking 20 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act
In ways large and small, the United States this week marked the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The landmark law signed by President George H. W. Bush assures equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in employment, access to public facilities, transportation and telecommunications.
Some grand gestures took place in Washington, D.C. President Barack Obama has ordered federal agencies to amplify their efforts to hire 100,000 disabled employees over the next five years. Official prodding seems warranted -- according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, workers with disabilities such as deafness, blindness, missing extremities, mental retardation and partial or complete paralysis make up less than 1 percent of the federal work force.
