Before going into a difficult listening situation,
take a moment to think about:
- With whom you will be communicating
- What topics are likely to be discussed
- Positioning yourself where you will hear best
- What you can do to reduce background noise
- Preparing yourself to inform others that you have
a hearing loss
If communication breaks down, initiate repair by:
- Confirming. Repeat what you think was said and
ask if it is correct.
- Clarifying. Ask a question that will provide more
information about what was said.
- Admitting. Say that you have a hearing loss or
are having difficulty understanding and ask the speaker
to slow down and repeat what was said.
- Accepting. If you remain unable to understand,
ask the speaker to write down what was said.
