Communication with those who support Deafness Research Foundation is extremely important to DRF's Board of Directors. As a co-chair of the Communications Committee and Secretary of DRF, I welcome you to the second issue of Hearing Health E-News, our quarterly e-newsletter. DRF ANNOUNCES 2009-2010 HEARING AND BALANCE SCIENCE RESEARCH GRANT RECIPIENTS
DRF is excited to announce that it has awarded 17 grants of up to $25,000 each to outstanding young scientists whose projects are in the field of hearing and balance research. To view a list of our 2009-2010 grant recipients, click here

DRF ANNOUNCES DR. CHIN-TUAN TAN TO RECEIVE THE C.H.E.A.R. AWARD
Dr. Chin-Tuan Tan has been awarded the C.H.E.A.R. award for his project entitled, "Measuring and Predicting the Quality of Nonlinearly Distorted Music and Speech as Perceived by Hearing-Impaired People." Dr. Tan was chosen based on scientific merit and relevance to the field of sensory-neural deafness. Dr. Tan's research has been funded in conjunction with DRF's C.H.E.A.R. Endowment Grant.
This endowment was created in 1991 to support an annual Sensory-Neural Deafness Research Grant.
C.H.E.A.R. (Children Hearing Education and Research) was absorbed into DRF in 1991, and we are very excited to continue their legacy of funding research in sensory-neural deafness. For more information about Dr. Tan's research, clickhere
DRF ANNOUNCES CENTURION CLINICAL RESEARCH AWARD RECIPIENT, DR. MARK ECKERT
DRF partnered with CORE Grants Program of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) to offer a one-year Centurion Clinical Research Award (CCRA) of $50,000 for clinical research in hearing and balance sciences.
Dr. Mark Eckert from the Medical University of South Carolina is the 2009-10 DRF Centurion Award recipient for his project entitled, "Neural Changes Underlying Speech-Perception Training in the Aging Brain" that investigates the functional changes in the brain related to improved speech recognition in people with age-related hearing loss who have undergone a novel speech perception training program. DRF ANNOUNCES DR. ADAM MARKARYAN'S RESEARCH FUNDED BY THE BURCH-SAFFORD FOUNDATION
Dr. Adam Markaryan from the University of Chicago has been awarded a grant for his project entitled, "Mitochondrial DNA Deletions and Cochlear Element Degeneration in Presbycusis." This research award is funded by The Burch-Safford Foundation, Inc. For more information about Dr. Markaryan's research, click here

FORMER MISS USA, SHAWNAE JEBBIA, VISITS DRF OFFICE
DRF staff met with 1998 Miss USA, Shawnae Jebbia on June 5, 2009, where she shared her experience with early-onset Meniere's Disease. Shawnae's story will be featured in the Fall 2009 issue of Hearing Health magazine.
